About Pulmonology
Most of us never think about breathing until it becomes difficult. A pulmonologist, or lung specialist, treats the lungs and airways, from asthma and COPD to infections and breathing problems during sleep. Air pollution, smoking and past infections like TB all leave their mark on the lungs, which is why early care matters.
When to See a Pulmonologist
- A cough that has lasted more than three weeks
- Breathlessness or wheezing, especially at night, during exercise, or in dust and smoke
- Asthma that is not well controlled, or needing your reliever inhaler often
- A long history of smoking, with a cough or breathlessness that is getting worse
- Loud snoring with pauses in breathing, or waking up unrefreshed
Online or In-Clinic?
Reviewing chest X-rays, CT scans and lung function reports, checking how you use your inhaler, and adjusting treatment all work well online. Listening to your chest and tests like spirometry need an in-clinic visit.

Frequently Asked Questions
Could a cough that lasts weeks be TB?
A cough for more than two weeks, especially with fever, night sweats or weight loss, should be tested for TB. TB is curable with a full course of treatment, and testing and treatment are free at government health centres in India.
Are inhalers harmful or habit-forming?
No. Inhalers deliver a small dose of medicine straight to the lungs, so they usually have fewer side effects than tablets. For asthma, a regular preventer inhaler is the most effective treatment, and stopping it on your own makes attacks more likely.
Does air pollution affect the lungs?
Yes. Pollution can trigger asthma and COPD flare-ups and irritate healthy lungs too. On high-pollution days, limit time outdoors, avoid exercising near traffic, and keep your medicines handy if you have a lung condition.
What is COPD?
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a long-term lung condition that makes it harder to breathe out. It is most often caused by smoking, but in India smoke from cooking on wood or dung fuel is also a major cause. Stopping smoking and the right inhalers help slow it down.
