About Dermatology

Skin problems rarely hurt much, but they can affect how you feel about yourself. A dermatologist treats the skin, hair and nails, and can often find the cause in one visit, after months of trying different creams.

When to See a Dermatologist

  • Acne that leaves marks or scars, or has not improved after two to three months of over-the-counter care
  • Hair fall that is sudden or patchy, or comes with an itchy, scaly scalp
  • An itchy rash that keeps returning, especially in skin folds, which is common in humid weather
  • Dark patches or uneven skin tone that is spreading
  • A mole that changes in size, shape or colour, bleeds, or looks different from your other moles

Online or In-Clinic?

Skin is one of the areas where an online consultation can go a long way, because the doctor can see the problem. Clear photos taken in daylight help. Procedures like chemical peels or a biopsy, or anything that needs a closer look, need an in-clinic visit.

Get Medical Help Straight Away If You Notice

  • A rash that spreads quickly and comes with fever
  • Blistering or peeling skin, especially after starting a new medicine
  • Swelling of the face, lips or tongue, or trouble breathing

Contact your nearest healthcare provider straight away, or go to the nearest hospital emergency department.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use steroid creams for a rash without a prescription?

It is best not to. Steroid creams, including many mixed or “fairness” creams sold over the counter, can thin the skin, cause acne and stretch marks, and make fungal infections spread. Use them only the way a doctor prescribes.

How long does acne treatment take to work?

Most acne treatments take six to eight weeks to show a clear difference, and a few months for the full effect. Skin can look slightly worse in the first few weeks. Stopping too early is the most common reason treatment seems not to work.

How much hair fall is normal?

Losing around 50 to 100 hairs a day is normal. Heavier shedding a few months after a fever, illness, surgery or childbirth is common and usually recovers on its own. Patchy loss, a widening parting or a receding hairline is worth showing a dermatologist.

Do I need a dermatologist for dandruff?

Mild dandruff usually settles with an anti-dandruff shampoo used regularly. See a dermatologist if your scalp is red, sore or weeping, if flakes spread to your face or ears, or if a few weeks of shampoo have not helped.
