About Cancer Care

Hearing the word cancer, whether about yourself or someone you love, can be overwhelming. The questions pile up: how serious is it, what are the options, where do we go next? An oncologist is a cancer specialist who can explain a diagnosis clearly, guide treatment, and give a second opinion when you need one.

When to See an Oncologist

  • A biopsy or scan report that mentions cancer, a tumour, or something “suspicious”
  • Wanting a second opinion on a diagnosis or treatment plan
  • Side effects from chemotherapy, radiation or other treatment
  • Cancer in several family members, and questions about screening or genetic testing
  • Caring for someone with cancer and needing guidance on what to expect

Symptoms Worth Getting Checked

A lump, a sore that does not heal, unusual bleeding, a change in bowel habits, a cough or hoarse voice that lasts weeks, difficulty swallowing, or weight loss you cannot explain should be checked by a doctor. Most of these turn out not to be cancer, but checking early matters.

Online or In-Clinic?

An online consultation is a good way to understand reports, get a second opinion and plan next steps. Treatment itself, such as chemotherapy, radiation and surgery, happens at a hospital or cancer centre.

Get Medical Help Straight Away If You Notice

  • A temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher during chemotherapy
  • Vomiting that will not stop, or being unable to keep fluids down
  • Breathlessness, chest pain, or bleeding that will not stop

Contact your nearest healthcare provider straight away, or go to the nearest hospital emergency department.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I get a second opinion on a cancer diagnosis?

It is common and sensible, especially before major treatment, and a good oncologist will not be offended. Bring all your reports, scan images and, if possible, the biopsy slides or blocks, not only the written reports.

Which cancer screening tests should I get?

It depends on your age, sex and risk. Commonly recommended screening includes a Pap smear or HPV test for cervical cancer, breast examination and mammography for breast cancer, and a mouth examination for people who use tobacco. Ask your doctor what is right for you.

Can cancer be cured?

Many cancers can be cured, especially when found early, and others can be controlled for years with treatment. The outlook depends on the type and stage of cancer and the person’s overall health, which your oncologist can explain for your situation.

How can I support someone going through cancer treatment?

Offer practical help: cooking meals, going with them to hospital visits, handling paperwork and insurance claims. Listen more than you advise. And look after yourself too; caring for someone is exhausting, and it is okay to ask for help.
