About Dental

Most of us visit a dentist only when a tooth starts to hurt, by which time a small, painless fix has often become a bigger one. Regular check-ups catch cavities and gum disease early, when treatment is quicker and costs less.

When to See a Dentist

  • Tooth pain, or sensitivity to hot, cold or sweet food
  • Bleeding, swollen or receding gums, or bad breath that does not go away
  • A broken, chipped or loose tooth
  • Crooked teeth or a bite that does not meet well, if you are thinking about braces or aligners
  • A mouth ulcer, or a white or red patch, that has not healed in two weeks, especially if you use tobacco

Online or In-Clinic?

An online consultation can help you understand tooth pain, decide how urgent it is, get advice on braces or aligners, and plan treatment. Cleaning, fillings, root canals and extractions all need an in-clinic visit.

Get Medical Help Straight Away If You Notice

  • Facial swelling with fever, or swelling spreading towards the eye or neck
  • Difficulty swallowing, breathing or opening your mouth
  • A knocked-out adult tooth: hold it by the crown, keep it in milk, and see a dentist within the hour

Contact your nearest healthcare provider straight away, or go to the nearest hospital emergency department.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I visit a dentist?

For most people, a check-up and cleaning every six months to a year is a good rule. Your dentist may suggest more frequent visits if you have gum disease or many fillings.

Do bleeding gums mean something serious?

Bleeding while brushing is usually an early sign of gum inflammation from plaque build-up. It is reversible with better brushing, flossing and a professional cleaning. Keep brushing, and see a dentist if it continues.

Is a root canal painful?

With local anaesthetic, a root canal usually feels much like getting a filling. It is done to relieve the pain of an infected tooth, and some soreness for a few days afterwards is normal.

Braces or aligners: which is better?

Both can straighten teeth. Aligners are nearly invisible and removable, but need to be worn around 20 to 22 hours a day. Braces suit a wider range of problems and do not depend on you remembering to wear them. An orthodontist can tell you which suits your teeth.
