About Ophthalmology

When to See an Eye Specialist
- Blurred vision, headaches while reading, or squinting at screens
- Red, itchy, watery or sticky eyes that do not settle in a couple of days
- Dry, gritty eyes, especially after long hours on screens
- Cloudy or faded vision, or glare from headlights at night
- Regular check-ups if you have diabetes or high blood pressure, or glaucoma runs in your family
Online or In-Clinic?
An online consultation can help with red or itchy eyes, dry eyes, and deciding how urgent a problem is. Testing your vision, checking eye pressure and examining the back of the eye all need an in-clinic visit.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I get my eyes tested?
Adults with healthy eyes should have a check-up every one to two years, and more often after 40 or if you have diabetes. Children should have their eyes checked before starting school and regularly after that.
Do screens damage the eyes?
Screens do not cause permanent damage, but long stretches can cause eye strain and dryness. Try the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds, and remember to blink.
When should a cataract be operated on?
When it starts affecting daily life, such as reading, driving or recognising faces. There is usually no need to wait for a cataract to “ripen”; modern surgery is done earlier, and recovery is usually quick.
Can I wear contact lenses all day?
Follow the wearing time your eye doctor recommends, and never sleep in lenses unless they are made for it. If your eyes become red or painful, take the lenses out and see a doctor, as lens-related infections can be serious.
