About Paediatrics

When your child is unwell, even a small fever can keep you up all night wondering whether it is serious. A paediatrician looks after children from birth to their teenage years, and will take your questions seriously.

When to See a Paediatrician

  • Any fever in a baby under three months old
  • A fever that lasts more than two to three days, or a child who is unusually drowsy or irritable
  • Refusing feeds or fluids, fewer wet diapers, or repeated vomiting or loose motions
  • A cough, or breathing that sounds noisy or fast
  • Questions about growth, feeding, sleep, milestones or the vaccination schedule

Online or In-Clinic?

Many parenting worries can be sorted out online: feeding and sleep questions, rashes, mild colds, and whether a fever needs a visit. If the doctor needs to listen to your child’s chest, look in their ears, or check weight and growth, they will suggest an in-clinic visit.

Get Medical Help Straight Away If You Notice

  • Fast or difficult breathing, or skin pulling in between the ribs
  • A baby who is floppy, hard to wake, or has a weak cry
  • A fit (seizure)
  • A rash that does not fade when you press a glass against it
  • No urine for eight hours or more, or a sunken soft spot on a baby’s head

Contact your nearest healthcare provider straight away, or go to the nearest hospital emergency department.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which vaccines does my child need?

India’s national immunisation schedule and the Indian Academy of Pediatrics schedule list the vaccines children need from birth through the teenage years. Your paediatrician will guide you on timing and on optional vaccines worth considering. Keep your child’s vaccination card safe.

How high a fever is too high for a child?

How your child is behaving matters more than the number. A child who plays normally once the fever comes down is usually less worrying than one who stays drowsy even without fever. Any fever in a baby under three months needs a doctor straight away.

Is it safe to give my child paracetamol?

Paracetamol is commonly used for fever and pain in children, but the dose depends on your child’s weight, not age. Use the measuring device that comes with the syrup, and check the dose with your doctor. Never give aspirin to children.

When should my baby start solid food?

At around six months, alongside continued breastfeeding. Start with soft, mashed home food, one new food at a time. Talk to your paediatrician if your baby was born early or has feeding difficulties.
