About Ear Nose and Throat

Ear, nose and throat problems are easy to dismiss as “just a cold”, until the blocked nose lasts for months or the ear keeps aching. An ENT specialist treats the ears, nose, sinuses, throat and voice box, along with problems like snoring and dizziness.

When to See an ENT Specialist

  • Ear pain, discharge from the ear, or a blocked feeling that does not go away
  • Hearing loss, or ringing in the ears
  • A blocked or runny nose with facial pressure for more than ten days, or sinus trouble that keeps returning
  • Frequent sore throats or tonsillitis, or a hoarse voice that lasts more than three weeks
  • Loud snoring, especially with pauses in breathing during sleep

Online or In-Clinic?

An online ENT consultation helps with sinus and allergy symptoms, repeated sore throats, and reviewing reports. Looking properly inside the ear, nose or throat usually needs instruments, so for ear problems, hearing loss or a lasting hoarse voice, expect the doctor to recommend an in-clinic visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I clean my ears with cotton buds?

No. Ears clean themselves, and cotton buds usually push wax deeper and can injure the ear canal or eardrum. If wax is blocking your hearing, a doctor can remove it safely.

Is sudden hearing loss an emergency?

Yes. Sudden hearing loss in one ear, with or without ringing, should be seen by an ENT specialist within a day or two. Early treatment gives the best chance of recovery.

When are tonsils removed?

Usually only when tonsillitis keeps coming back several times a year over more than a year, when enlarged tonsils cause breathing problems during sleep, or after complications like an abscess. Most sore throats never need surgery.

Is snoring harmful?

Occasional snoring is common. Loud snoring with pauses in breathing, gasping, or feeling very sleepy during the day can be a sign of sleep apnoea. It is worth getting checked, because it is linked to high blood pressure and heart problems.
