VIDEO: What Is The Best Diet For An Acidity Patient?

Talk To A Dietitian Good health is just one tap away!

About Gastroenterology

Stomach trouble is easy to put down to something you ate. But acidity every night, bloating after every meal, or a change in bowel habits deserves attention. A gastroenterologist treats the food pipe, stomach, intestines, liver, gallbladder and pancreas.

When to See a Gastroenterologist

  • Acidity or heartburn more than twice a week, or needing antacids regularly
  • Bloating, gas or abdominal pain that keeps coming back
  • Constipation or loose motions lasting more than a few weeks, or a change in your usual bowel habits
  • Difficulty swallowing, or feeling full after small meals
  • Abnormal liver tests, fatty liver on a scan, or yellowing of the eyes or skin

Online or In-Clinic?

Talking through symptoms, reviewing liver tests, scan or endoscopy reports, and adjusting diet and medicines all work well online. An abdominal examination, and procedures like endoscopy and colonoscopy, need an in-clinic visit.

Get Medical Help Straight Away If You Notice

  • Vomiting blood, or vomit that looks like coffee grounds
  • Black, tar-like stools, or blood in your stools
  • Severe abdominal pain that does not ease
  • Yellow eyes with confusion or drowsiness

Contact your nearest healthcare provider straight away, or go to the nearest hospital emergency department.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to take antacids every day?

An occasional antacid is fine. If you need one most days, see a doctor instead of managing it yourself for months. Frequent acidity can have a cause that needs treatment, and long-term acid-reducing medicines are best taken under supervision.

What helps with bloating?

Eating slowly, having smaller meals, and noticing your trigger foods often helps. Common triggers include beans, onions, fizzy drinks and, for some people, milk. Bloating with weight loss, blood in stools, or pain that wakes you at night should be checked.

Is fatty liver serious?

Fatty liver is common and often causes no symptoms. It can usually be improved with weight loss, regular exercise, and cutting down on alcohol and sugary food. It is worth monitoring, because in some people it can lead to liver damage over the years.

When is an endoscopy needed?

When symptoms like difficulty swallowing, repeated vomiting, bleeding, anaemia or weight loss need a closer look, or when acidity does not respond to treatment. It is a short procedure, and many centres offer sedation to make it comfortable.
