A gastroenterologist is a medical specialist who concentrates on the health of the digestive system. It includes the stomach, oesophagus, large intestine, small intestine, gallbladder, liver, and pancreas. Moreover, they also receive training to diagnose and treat a wide range of issues. From common issues like acidity and bloating to complicated procedures like endoscopy, ERCP, or colonoscopy. The gastroenterologist in Coimbatore also offers care for inflammatory bowel conditions and chronic liver disease, which makes them vital for both long-term disease management and everyday digestive health.

A gastroenterologist treats a large number of digestive health disorders, which includes the following:

• IBS/IBD: Ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, and Crohn’s disease
• GERD & Acidity: Heartburn, chronic acid reflux, and oesophageal inflammation
• Liver Disease: Hepatitis B & C, fatty liver, jaundice, and cirrhosis
• Gallstones: Gallbladder stones, biliary colic, and cholecystitis
• Pancreatitis: Chronic and acute inflammation of the pancreas

A gastroenterologist may recommend blood tests (LFT, CBC), stool tests, endoscopy, colonoscopy, ultrasound, or CT scan of the abdomen. For specific conditions, they may order H. pylori testing, liver biopsy, or breath tests for lactose intolerance. These investigations help diagnose issues related to the digestive system, liver, and intestines, guiding appropriate treatment.
