How is it Diagnosed ?When to consult a Doctor?

1 ) Abnormal or heavy vaginal bleeding that is not controlled by other treatment method 2 ) Severe pain with menses that is not controlled by other treatment methods 3 ) Leiomyomas or uterine fibroids (noncancerous tumors). 4 ) Increased pelvic pain related to the uterus but not controlled by other treatments.

Causes

  • Uterine fibroids, or benign (non-cancerous) tumors in the uterus. Uterine fibroids are the most common reason for hysterectomy.
  • Consistent, abnormally heavy periods.
  • Cancer of the uterus, cervix, or ovaries, or evidence of precancerous growth. In some cases, having a family history of ovarian cancer or testing positive for the BRCA gene (which increases the risk of hormone-sensitive cancers such as ovarian and breast) leads to a hysterectomy recommendation.
  • Endometriosis, or uterine tissue growing outside the uterus.

Symptoms

  • Heavy periods – which can be caused by fibroids
  • Pelvic pain – which may be caused by endometriosis, unsuccessfully treated pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), adenomyosis or fibroids
  • Prolapse of the uterus

When to go for surgery?What would be a complication if not treated?

Hysterectomy is line of treatment for conditions which are not life threatening: 1 ) Precancerous changes of the endometrium, called hyperplasia. 2 ) Extensive endometriosis causing debilitating pain and/or involving other organs. 3 ) Fibroid tumors that are extensive, are large, involve other organs, or cause debilitating bleeding 4 ) Severe bleeding leading to anemia and not correctable with iron supplementation.
