What is Hernia?

The abdominal wall is formed by three layers of muscles. There are some weak points or openings in the muscles of the abdominal wall. If the intestines come out from the abdomen through these weak points/naturally occurring openings, then that condition is called Hernia. Many develop hernia after becoming adults but children too can have hernia.view more

How to diagnose Hernia? When to consult a doctor?

Your doctor would be able to make a diagnosis by just clinical examination. The presence of a swelling or a bulge on the skin, increases while coughing, straining during passing stools, crying, exercises or standing. During these activities, the pressure inside the tummy increases and hence forces the intestines out through weak points in the abdominal wall.

When to go for surgery? What would be the complication if not operated?

Surgery is the only treatment for Hernia-can be performed laparoscopically / open technique(which will be decided by your surgeon) The intestines are constantly moving in and out of the abdomen through the weak point., At times, the intestinal loops would come into the hernia but not return into the abdomen due to various reasons.

Is it covered under insurance?

Is the treatment covered under insurance?

Adult hernia surgery is covered under insurance. Pediatric hernias may or may not be covered. It depends on the terms and conditions of individual insurance companies, types of insurance and on the medical condition of the child.

How is the recovery after surgery?

Open hernia surgery, in which a surgeon utilizes a long incision to push the bulging organ back into place, generally requires a minimum of three weeks to recover. If a laparoscopic hernia repair is performed, recovery is closer to one to two weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

There are no preventable steps that can be taken to avoid hernia in children. Post-surgery, there are no special changes required in the way a child is nursed by the parents. On the contrary in adults, quitting smoking in all forms, regular exercises, preventing constipation, weight reduction if obese, adequately treated asthma and COPD and regular check to monitor prostate size in elderly men are some of the steps to prevent occurrence of hernia.

This is done through an incision along the groin crease/ bikini line. In adults there is a mesh placed between the layers of muscles forming the abs to strengthen the muscles and repair the defect. This mesh is made of non-absorbable and biocompatible material. Post-surgery patient can be discharged by next day.

In laparoscopic surgery, the principle is the same in both age groups. This is performed under general anesthesia and involves 3 small cuts on the abdomen which are around 10mm in size.
