Gallstones: What Is It?

Gallbladder is an organ situated below the liver. The formation of tiny crystal-like structures in the gallbladder called gallstones. The role of gallbladder is to store bile juices secreted by the liver. These juices help in digesting the food and fats.

Gallstones : Causes

There are various reasons behind the formation of gallstones in the gallbladder. These include excess cholesterol or bilirubin in the bile juice stored in the gallbladder. Sometimes, the gallbladder may not empty the bile properly. The bile gets concentrated and results in the formation of gallstones.

Symptoms of Gallstones

People with gallstones may not have any significant gallstone symptoms. The following symptoms may appear when a gallstone obstructs the bile duct: - Right shoulder pain - Back pain between the shoulder blades - A sharp, sudden abdominal pain on the upper right side - A sharp, sudden abdominal pain in the middle, immediately below the breastbone - Vomiting and nausea Gallstone pain lasts anywhere from a few minutes to many hours.

How to Diagnose Gallstones?

Certain tests and procedures can diagnose gallstones. The two most common ones are: Abdominal ultrasound: This is the most commonly used test to diagnose gallstones. A transducer device is moved back and forth across the stomach area. The signals received in a computer are created into images of the gallstones Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS): In this procedure, a thin tube called the endoscope is passed through the mouth into the digestive tract. A transducer in the tube produces sound waves, which are then converted into images of the condition. In addition to these, there are also imaging tests which include Oral Cholecystography, Hepatobiliary Iminodiacetic Acid (HIDA) scan, Computerized Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Cholangio Pancreatography (MRCP) and Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio Pancreatography (ERCP). Sometimes, blood tests are also done to identify infection, jaundice, gallstone pancreatitis or other complications caused by gallstones.

What Is the Treatment for Gallstones?

Gallbladder Removal (Cholecystectomy): If gallstones persistently recur, your healthcare provider might advise cholecystectomy, a surgical procedure to remove the gallbladder. It's important to note that living without a gallbladder is feasible as it doesn't impact overall survival. Instead of storing bile, the liver releases it directly into the small intestine. Medications for Gallstone Dissolution: Specific medications are available to facilitate the dissolution of gallstones. However, this process may extend over months or even years. It's important to be aware that gallstones could reappear once the treatment is discontinued.

When Will The Doctor Suggest Surgery?

The doctor will recommend gallstone or gallbladder surgery when the gallbladder is severely swollen or infected. Two types of surgeries are commonly performed. These are laparoscopic surgery (laparoscopic cholecystectomy) and open surgery (open cholecystectomy).
